A fatal shooting involving Denver Police left one man dead near a Westwood middle school on Monday night. The incident, which unfolded around 10:30 p.m., began when officers were called to the 900 block of South Hazel Court in response to reports of two adults outside the nearby school. As per 9NEWS, the situation escalated to gunfire exchange between the suspect and law enforcement.
According to KDVR, the confrontation arose after officers pursued an armed man who was instructed to drop his weapon but reportedly failed to comply. The man is said to have fired at officers while attempting to escape, prompting two Denver police officers and one Denver Public School safety officer to return fire, resulting in the man's injury that would later prove fatal. The authorities managed to secure the weapon and called for medical assistance, but the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
The Denver Post reports that the woman who was with the man at the time of the initial call vanished during the chaos of the shooting. Despite her absence, police have her identification and believe she can be contacted as a key witness to the incident. The identity of the deceased man is withheld until the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner can make a formal identification.
