Putnam County was the scene of a significant act of arson last Sunday, resulting in three individuals being hospitalized and the rescue of three dogs. The fire, which took place in a mobile home on Kin Street, has been confirmed as arson by the state fire marshal's office, reports News4Jax. First responders faced considerable obstacles upon arrival as entryways to the home were obstructed with refuse, an impediment to both the inhabitants’ escape and the rescuers' entry.
According to Action News Jax, deputies, and firefighters successfully evacuated the trapped occupants by removing a window air conditioning unit. In a chilling capture of the event, a video released by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office highlighted the first responders heeding cries for help, then extricating the victims through the makeshift egress. The suspect in the case, Charles Ogle, 54, is among those hurt in the blaze and was airlifted to a trauma hospital in Gainesville.
The fire reportedly erupted after Ogle set clothes on fire in the laundry room following a disagreement with the other residents, one of whom he was romantically involved with, Action News Jax revealed.
It seems this residence was no stranger to authorities, who've answered calls there before involving disturbance and domestic violence issues. In an incident earlier this year, one of the victims accused Ogle of attempting to set a jacket on fire, the sheriff's office disclosed to News4Jax.
The dramatic footage of the rescue operation shows responders urging those inside to come towards the clear entry they've created. Amidst the smoky chaos and urgency, the video is a stark testament to the dangers both of domestic altercations, and inaccessible living conditions. As reported by First Coast News, two women were among the injured, with one treated and released from HCA Florida Putnam Hospital, while the other remained there for observation. The three rescued dogs were taken to Putnam County Animal Care and Control.
Charges against Ogle are expected to be laid as the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, and the state fire marshal's office continue their investigation into the blazing dispute that could have ended in a greater tragedy if not for the determined efforts of the first responders. More information will be provided as the case progresses.
