Following the unrest on June 9th, the Austin Police Department (APD) has come forward with preliminary details and statistics about the protests and their response. According to an official release by APD, their approach emphasizes public safety and transparency while detailing the events, officer injuries, arrests, and their readiness for potential future demonstrations.
APD's report recognizes the right to peaceful protests and states that they support civic engagement, yet they maintain a clear stance against any actions that may endanger the community or law enforcement. On the day in question, demonstrations initiated at the Texas Capitol, moving towards downtown Austin, and then culminated at the JJ Pickle Federal Building, where the situation escalated with vandalism in the form of graffiti. APD, alongside the Department of Public Safety, managed traffic and protest routes throughout these developments, ensuring marchers could proceed safely.
When the protests intensified, some participants threw rocks at officers, leading to four officers getting injured. In response, APD deployed pepperball, and DPS used gas to disperse the crowd, aiming to prevent opportunists from regrouping at the Federal Building. Subsequently, several arrests were made with charges ranging from criminal mischief to harassment of a public servant. All injured officers have been released from the hospital, as per the APD.
The department also detailed the arrests of eight individuals, identified as Conor Williams and Abigail Pore for criminal mischief, Alexandra Haddix and Hayden Perez for failure to obey a lawful order, Cody Bates for harassment of a public servant, Edgar Tovar for reckless driving, and Shaneal Harun and Margarito Perez Montalvo for riot and resistance-related charges. In light of these events, APD advises those participating in demonstrations to act peacefully and report any dangerous behavior.
As Austin braces for possible future protests, APD reassures that there will be an increased police presence throughout the city. The use of technology to enhance monitoring and effective response was also noted, doubling down on their commitment to safety, accountability, and transparency. "Our goal remains clear: to protect the safety and rights of everyone, community members and officers alike," the APD stated in regard to their heightened preparations and continued vigilance.
