The mystery surrounding the disappearance and subsequent death of an engaged couple on Lake Oconee has been solved. Authorities have confirmed both died as a result of accidental drowning. Gary Jones and his fiancée Joycelyn Wilson went missing on February 8 during what was meant to be a celebratory boating trip for Jones's 50th birthday, as reported by FOX5 Atlanta.
Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills announced, "The written autopsy report says accidental drowning for both Wilson and Jones." Their unoccupied 12-foot Jon boat was found circling near Wallace Dam on Lake Oconee, after which a search operation was launched. Wilson's body was located the following day, while Jones' body was not discovered until nearly a month later, on March 9. Among the items found on the boat were life jackets, snacks, and a slice of birthday cake, as detailed by FOX5 Atlanta.
The ongoing search concluded when Keith Cormican, the founder of Bruce's Legacy, a non-profit specializing in search and recovery missions, used advanced sonar equipment to locate Jones's body. This information comes from 11Alive, who also specified that both Jones and Wilson were remembered as respected figures in the educational sector: Wilson as an instructor at Spelman College, and Jones as a coach at the Westminster School.
The investigation has now drawn to a close with the announced findings.
