The Baker County Sheriff's Office is sending up a flare, a warning to residents about a series of scams that have been fleecing locals. A social media post from BCSO laid out the details of the operations, with the first scam targeting senior citizens — callers pretend to be from victims' banks claiming an account breach, they then hoodwink said seniors into pulling large withdrawals from their banks and move this money into different financial institutions after telling the tellers a lie about the reason for the withdrawal.
In another scheme, Baker County residents are receiving calls from individuals claiming to be BCSO Deputies, who inform them there's an outstanding warrant that could be nixed if they just send over some cash via telephone, and though it might sound official, BCSO has made it clear they do not conduct business like this, they'll never call to request money for warrant issues.
The Baker County Sheriff's Office is asking the community to help spread awareness and to tell family members to be vigilant; if someone asks for money over the phone to resolve a legal matter, it's likely a trap. Should you or anyone in your circle fall prey to these unscrupulous tactics, contact Lieutenant David Mancini of the BCSO Detective Division at (904) 259-9218 to report the incident.
