In a move to bolster advocacy and support for the LGBTQIA+ community in Baltimore, Mayor Brandon M. Scott has appointed Dr. Melanie Bryant as the Director of the Mayor's Office of LGBTQ Affairs. Dr. Bryant, a seasoned leader with over 15 years in social work and public health, steps into a pivotal role previously held by Alexis Blackmon as Interim Director. According to a statement by the City of Baltimore's official website, Mayor Scott praised Dr. Bryant, saying, "All Baltimoreans, regardless of who they love or how they identify, deserve to live their lives freely and without fear or judgement."

Dr. Bryant's appointment comes at a time when the LGBTQIA+ community is facing increasingly complex challenges at the federal level. Her extensive experience in African-centered and gerontological practice, coupled with her work in addictions and social justice, positions her to navigate these obstacles effectively. "I'm proud to be joining Mayor Scott's administration as Director of LGBTQ Affairs, especially right now - as our community faces renewed attacks from the federal level that demand renewed levels of support and care for LGBTQIA+ residents," Dr. Bryant told the Mayor's Office.

Her past achievements include leading Ujima Consulting Group, LLC, and her role in raising over $10 million for non-profit organizations. Furthermore, as the executive director of the Beautiful Gate Outreach Center, she played a pivotal role in launching "The Hub," a safe haven for BIPOC LGBTQIA+ individuals. Beyond her professional work, Dr. Bryant also shares her knowledge as an adjunct faculty member at institutions such as Widener University, West Chester University, and Rutgers University, shaping minds in the fields of social policy and economic justice.
