The ennessee Department of Transportation has announced a significant interstate closure affecting anyone traveling through Hamilton County this weekend. According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation, due to construction at the I-75 at I-24 interchange, I-24 East near Exit 183 will be shut down starting on Friday, from 9:00 pm ET until Monday, June 30, at 6:00 am ET.
If you need to use this part of I-24 East, you'll have to take a detour. Traffic will exit at Germantown Road, follow South Terrace, and then re-enter the interstate using a temporary ramp. Tennessee Department of Transportation advises drivers to expect delays or avoid the area if possible. Lane closures on South Terrace will also start at 6:00 a.m. ET on Friday to prepare for construction.
The Tennessee government website advises travelers to be on the lookout for posted signs, adapt to the changing traffic conditions, and to use the Tennessee Department of Transportation SmartWay Map or call 511 for real-time state travel information. As an important reminder, the article also highlights that using phones to text, tweet, or talk while driving is not only risky but also illegal.
Police officers will be on-site to help with traffic and safety. Drivers are reminded to follow the Move Over Law, which requires giving space to emergency vehicles. Breaking this law can lead to up to 30 days in jail and a $500 fine, as per the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
