SanDai & KOPI Bar, the cherished Indonesian restaurant and cafe on North Main Street, has shuttered in a significant shift for East Bay's dining landscape. As reported by Eater SF, chef-owner Nora Haron confirmed that the Walnut Creek venue has closed its doors. The decision was made amid financial strains, including a hefty monthly rent of $28,500, and insufficient foot traffic during the weekdays.
Haron shared, "We're growing, evolving, and bringing Kopi Bar to even more people," pointing toward a plan to open new Kopi Bar locations. Eater SF notes that several other businesses in downtown Walnut Creek have also closed down in recent months, hinting at the area's broader economic challenge.
SanDai quickly became a favorite for its unique take on Nusantaran cuisine, with dishes like gado gado and mushroom satay. Meanwhile, Kopi Bar, recognized for its Indonesian-inspired beverages made from Mr. Espresso's unique roast, had become a go-to spot for coffee aficionados.
The restaurant's closure was officially announced today. Haron told the San Francisco Chronicle, "We really had a good time with the fun-loving atmosphere and sunny, stroll-friendly streets of Walnut Creek." She shares memories of "heartfelt connections in the community," even though the business faced the challenge of sustaining itself amid slower midweek sales.
