Boston's balmy beginning to the summer season is set to take a sizzling turn, with temperatures expected to soar near the century mark. Summer officially kicked off last night at 10:42, just in time for a substantial climb in the mercury. Saturday's weather should be greeted warmly by beachgoers despite a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms post 1 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. The forecast suggests a low around 70 degrees overnight, painting a picture of a classic warm New England night.
While, Sunday urges caution with the heat index anticipated to hit nearly 100 degrees, indicating a potentially dangerous uptick in temperature for the early week. "Our summer scorcher peaks on Tuesday as air temperatures near 100 and the heat index vaults to low to mid 100s," warns NBC Boston, urging residents to stay in air-conditioned spaces and limit exertion during peak heat hours. It's of note, the last occurrence of such formidable heat in Boston was back in July 2022, nearly three years prior.
True relief is not expected until midweek, when a so-called "back door cool front" is forecasted to press through. Locals can anticipate a retreat from the 90s and, eventually, a descent into the 70s by Thursday. This cooldown is set to bring with it clouds and possible showers, providing a much-needed reprieve from the sweltering conditions. The National Weather Service gives a heads up for a 30% chance of showers on Thursday, climbing to 40% through to Friday.
The extended forecast from the National Weather Service also points towards a mostly sunny Monday, with highs around the 90-degree mark, and a slight dip to a low around 75 by nightfall. But even as the luminary dips below the horizon, the city will scarcely cool, the winds merely a whisper of southwest warmth. Residents should remain vigilant as heat-related illnesses can strike fast under such conditions, and heed advice to take it easy, with both agencies emphasizing the need for hydration and rest during this torrid patch.
