Boston is bracing for a sweltering start to the week, as a heat wave announced its arrival with morning thunderstorms. According to the NWS forecast, today’s early storms will give way to partly sunny skies and rising temperatures, with a high near 93 degrees and heat index values reaching up to 96. A west wind is expected to blow at 10 to 16 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 28 mph. There is a 40% chance of precipitation, with possible thunderstorms before the heat intensifies.
The onslaught of summer heat doesn't stop there. Boston 25 News reports that an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for most of Massachusetts through Tuesday, cautioning residents of dangerously high temperatures and humidity level. Southern New Hampshire, while not under the warning, is advised similarly with a Heat Advisory and Extreme Heat Watch. With the mercury expected to climb into the mid-90s on Monday and perhaps hit the 100s by Tuesday, individuals are urged to stay hydrated, reduce outdoor activities, and check on those who may be particularly at risk in such conditions.
As Tuesday approaches, predictions show a worrying peak in temperatures, with the forecast talking 'triple-digit highs' and heat index values that might surpass 110 degrees. Bostonians are advised to take all necessary precautions amid what could be record-setting high temperatures across the region. Monday night will remain warm, offering little respite with lows around 75 degrees and a continued south wind around 6 mph.
Come Wednesday, residents can expect a modest drop in the stifling heat, with highest temperatures receding to the upper 80s. The weather forecast suggests a north wind shifting east in the afternoon and a chance of showers after days of relentless heat. Relief from the extreme heat will progress as Thursday's projections indicate a dip further into the mid-70s, introducing a more unsettled weather pattern characterized by potential showers and somewhat cooler conditions heading into the weekend. Though still at a 40% chance, Boston can anticipate more showers come Friday, with continued cloudy skies and high temperatures near 72 degrees.
The community is reminded to stay vigilant during the early week's extreme temperatures. Keeping a close eye on local weather updates is key to staying safe during this surge of summer heat, which is expected to challenge Bostonians with its intensity before the long-awaited cooling trend takes a firmer hold later in the week.
