Boston is bracing for what could be a scorching day, with the National Weather Service's Boston/Norton office issuing an Extreme Heat Warning, reporting dangerously hot conditions with heat index values expected to reach up to 110 degrees. The warning applies not only to Boston but also to various parts of northern Connecticut; central, eastern, northeastern, southeastern, and western Massachusetts; as well as northern and southern Rhode Island.
In a statement obtained by the NWS, today's weather in Boston is forecasted to be sunny and hot, with a high near 102 and heat index values as high as 107. Amidst the intense heat, the West wind will blow 7 to 11 mph, possibly providing little relief from the stifling conditions. As night falls, residents can expect mostly clear skies with a low around 79.
According to NBC Boston, Tuesday's "feels-like" temperatures in Greater Boston could top 109 degrees, especially in communities that are away from the water. The report emphasizes the importance of taking precautions in the extreme heat, including drinking plenty of water, pacing oneself, and wearing sunscreen in anticipation of plenty of sunshine throughout the day.
There appears to be a brief respite on the horizon as this heat wave begins to subside. A cold front moving in on Thursday is forecasted to bring some heat relief with high temperatures dropping to the low 70s. "A few scattered showers are more likely on Thursday," as NBC Boston reported, indicating that the rain, while taking a break from the extreme temperatures, residents should carry umbrellas expressing relief for the cooler air. Following the front, the weekend is expected to see highs in the mid 70s with a continued chance of showers.
Wednesday will still be hot with highs in the upper 80s in Boston, according to the NWS. A stray shower or storm is possible on Wednesday, and the wind will shift from northwest in the morning to east in the afternoon, blowing at 7 to 9 mph. A 30% chance of precipitation follows the partly cloudy night, with a low around 65.
Looking ahead, Bostonians can expect a return to more moderate weather by the weekend. The NBC Boston forecaster notes that highs will be in the low 70s on Friday, with mostly cloudy skies. Another frontal system is predicted to arrive by Saturday, potentially bringing more scattered showers and highs in the mid 70s. By Sunday, the weather shifts to mostly cloudy with a high near 80, and partly sunny conditions with a high near 88 by Monday, offering a gradual return to more typical temperatures.
