Boulder Police have taken a 28-year-old man into custody, connecting him to an alarming string of assaults using a chain. The assaults, which occurred between June 26 and June 27, left the community on edge as reports came in from across the city. According to the Boulder Police Department, the first incident was reported near 13th and Canyon at 11:22 a.m. on June 26, and within minutes, several more reports surfaced of a male suspect assaulting or threatening individuals with a chain.
Witness descriptions helped police canvas the area, but the suspect had fled on a bicycle before they could apprehend him. A series of distressing encounters followed, peaking with a report received from the 4800 block of Baseline Road. Though the suspect was at large for over a day, by 4:24 p.m. on Friday, he was finally in police hands. "As in every criminal case, these charges are an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless or until proven guilty," the Boulder Police Department reminded.
Throughout this frightening spree, eight individuals were victimized, including seven women and one man. The suspect's weapon of choice was a metal chain, akin to those used for securing bicycles or gates, which he swung menacingly at people and, in one instance, struck a vehicle. Fortunately, no one sustained serious injuries, and no emergency medical services were required. Police recovered multiple chains that the suspect had in his possession, bolstering the evidence against him.
Charges against the man include second-degree assault, attempted second-degree assault, felony menacing, and criminal mischief. Boulder Police emphasized that their investigation is ongoing, and more charges might be filed. Residents who might have information regarding this incident have been urged to contact Boulder Police Detectives at 303-441-1974, referencing the report number 25-05785. The identity of the suspect is withheld pending further interviews with the victims.
