In response to the June 1 terror attack, the City of Boulder has revealed a partnership with local businesses aimed at bolstering safety measures in the downtown area. A statement released by Boulder officials outlines a comprehensive plan that includes a multi-faceted approach driven by proactive safety planning and an enhanced police presence to foster an atmosphere of security within the downtown business district, particularly around Pearl Street Mall.
The Boulder Police Department, now at full strength, can better focus on proactive policing and developing relationships with the downtown businesses, as indicated by the city's recent updates. Alongside staffing improvements, a dedicated E-bike patrol unit has been introduced to increase police mobility and response times. The city also appointed a downtown police sergeant to coordinate mall policing and public safety initiatives, "ensuring Pearl Street continues to be the vibrant core of our city," said Rivera-Vandermyde, as per the City of Boulder, whose sentiments reflect the partnership’s dedication to the local economy and culture.
These proactive strategies underscore a broader narrative of collaboration between law enforcement, the Downtown Boulder Partnership, and the community. The creation of the Downtown Officer Block Program inserts police officers into the Business Improvement District fabric, designating them as liaisons to the businesses they serve. This close-knit relationship delivers a tailored approach to downtown safety and stands as a testament to the city’s commitment to protecting merchants and patrons alike.
Addressing the domain of public facilities, Boulder has hired restroom attendants to oversee the Pearl Street restrooms and established an on-call public space management team to tackle issues such as illegal camping downtown. Moreover, the Downtown Boulder Ambassador team, operational seven days a week, plays a versatile role in sanitation, hospitality, and safety, working in lockstep with law enforcement. Not only are these efforts evident in security measures, but they extend to aesthetic and functionality improvements like tree plantings, lighting repair, enhanced bike racks, and masonry works that contribute to a vibrant and inviting public space. "A safe, welcoming environment is the cornerstone of a thriving downtown," said Bettina Swigger, CEO of Downtown Boulder, as obtained by the City of Boulder.
