A man is now in custody following a chase that ensued after a Butts County traffic stop went awry due to the discovery of drugs, officials reported. The incident unfolded on Friday night when a man, identified as Michael Brown Jr., attempted to evade law enforcement following a vehicle stop on Interstate 75 for a traffic violation; he took flight with a significant quantity of methamphetamine.
Upon being stopped by deputies, Brown bolted from the scene on foot, dodging officers for an extended period of time, only to find himself navigating the terrain near the Georgia Diagnostic Prison, as per the Banks County Sheriff's Office. The vast manhunt involved bloodhound tracking teams provided by the Georgia Department of Corrections, which eventually led to Brown's capture after managing to cross over Interstate 7 and trespass onto prison property.
Following the apprehension, deputies reported the retrieval of over a pound of methamphetamine discarded by Brown in his scramble. In an expression tinged with dry wit, Butts County Sheriff Gary Long praised his deputies for their multifaceted roles, "Sometimes my deputies have to wear many hats and are required to be more than just deputies. Tonight, I would call them real estate agents," adding with a dash of irony that they provided Mr. Brown with an extensive "tour of the beautiful landscape of the outside perimeter of his future home, the Georgia Diagnostic Prison in beautiful Butts County," Sheriff Gary Long said in a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta.
This sentiment was echoed by Sheriff Long in another statement, where he referred to his team's ability to adapt as being akin to real estate agents and the landscape as a perimeter tour of Brown's "future home," as stated in a detailed account of the incident provided by Atlanta News First.
