In preparation for expected demonstrations over the weekend, Governor Gavin Newsom has proactively ordered the deployment of safety and security resources throughout the state of California. This strategy aims to support local law enforcement in safeguarding the public during protests. Newsom's move was made public today, confirming his proactive stance on maintaining order and protecting First Amendment rights.
On the ground, nearly 700 officers from all eight of California Highway Patrol's Special Response Teams (SRT) are pre-staged around the state, as the CHP's Southern Division is on tactical alert, ensuring all uniformed personnel are ready to respond if called upon. "The California Highway Patrol actively protects and upholds every individual's First Amendment right to peacefully assemble and express their views," CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee stated. "Our officers stand ready to ensure these rights are exercised safely and lawfully," Duryee told the governor's office.
The coordination of responses includes the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), which, while having not received significant requests for mutual aid, stays in close communication with local entities. Cal OES Director Nancy Ward emphasized the agency's readiness to assist, saying, "Cal OES remains prepared to assist and respond. We’re in close contact with local government partners and stand ready to assist with any requests for support or mutual aid," as reported on the Governor's official website.
