Shoppers and bank customers in Hempfield Township faced the unsettling news that an ATM inside the GetGo store on Route 30 had been compromised. The Pennsylvania State Police revealed that a card skimmer, a device illicitly installed to steal customers' card information, was discovered in the Citizens Bank ATM at 6517 Route 30, according to a report by WTAE.
The skimmer's presence was confirmed when state police responded to the store location. At present, the perpetrators behind the scheme have not been identified. Officials are urging anyone who might have information about this incident to reach out to the Greensburg station, as mentioned in a WPXI news release.
The discovery of the skimmer last Thursday raised serious concerns about how long customer data might have been at risk and when the device was installed. The illegal card skimmer, equipped with a camera to record users' PINs, poses a substantial threat to personal financial security. The timeline for when the skimmer was placed, however, remains unclear.
For the moment, the safety of transactions at the affected ATM has been restored, and customers can report any suspicious activities or insights by calling the PSP Greensburg barracks at 724-832-3288.
