The City of Chandler is putting down the grass in favor of more desert-friendly flora. In a move toward sustainability, the Chandler City Council approved agreements for the Turf to Xeriscape program. This initiative is slated to transform around 25 acres of grassy terrain within stormwater retention basins into xeriscape, a landscaping method that significantly reduces or eliminates the need for irrigation, as reported by the City of Chandler.
According to a recent announcement by the City of Chandler, these efforts mark the first phase in the Turf to Xeriscape program. Its completion, alongside the second phase, is expected to conserve upwards of 22.5 million gallons of water annually. With Arizona's arid climate and water scarcity concerns, local governing bodies have turned their attention to more sustainable practices, and Chandler's initiative is at the forefront of this conservation-minded landscape transformation.
Targeted areas for the xeriscaping are located north of Loop 202 Santan Freeway stretching between Kyrene Road and Arizona Avenue. By substituting the current turf with drought-resistant plant species, City of Chandler is actively addressing the critical issue of water management and taking measures to ensure a long-term sustainable water supply.
Financial backing for the project comes in part from a grant awarded by the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA). Diverse design inputs have shaped the vision for each basin, thanks to contributions by J2 Engineering and Environmental Design. A concerted public outreach effort preceded the council's decision, with over 3,100 postcards mailed out and public meetings convened for community input. Revisions to the initial proposals were made before reaching the final phases of approval, demonstrating Chandler's dedication to community engagement and transparent governance, as per the City of Chandler.
In terms of logistics, the plan includes removal of existing sod, edge preparation, and the installation of a new drip irrigation system, among other tasks. ELS Construction, Inc. has been tapped for construction, while Burgess & Niple, Inc. will oversee construction management services. More specifics about the Turf to Xeriscape program can be found on the City of Chandler's dedicated project site, inviting residents to stay informed and involved in Chandler's greener, less thirsty future.
