A Chicago firefighter, Jose Perez, has been left paralyzed following a traumatic injury incurred during the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon in San Francisco earlier this month. NBC Chicago reported that Perez, an experienced triathlete and a ten-year veteran of the fire department, was injured when another swimmer landed on him as he entered the San Francisco Bay. "I could feel my head about to hit the surface and as my head hit the surface I just felt like a tremendous boom like a big weight just hit the back of my head," Perez recounted in an interview with NBC Chicago.

As shared by ABC 7 Chicago, Perez, who regularly partakes in multiple triathlons annually, immediately understood the gravity of the situation. "Immediately, I just knew. I can't move. I'm paralyzed," he said. Perez's hardship has resonated deeply with his colleagues and community, as his fellow firefighters have taken action to support him. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support what is anticipated to be a challenging recovery process.

Doctors have expressed cautious optimism regarding Perez's recovery, although they expect it will be at least six months before he is cleared to return to Chicago. "They’ve really rallied around me to make sure I have not been on my own throughout all this and they’ve pretty much given me a lot of hope," Perez told NBC Chicago
