A spate of burglaries has plagued small businesses in the Chicago Loop area, with the Chicago Police Department issuing a business alert to notify the public. Three commercial robberies have been reported within the 1st (Central) District, each involving a single perpetrator forcibly entering through front entrances of restaurants and small retail outlets.
The string of incidents, occurring late at night or early in the morning, saw the thief or thieves making away with cash registers, tip jars, tobacco products, and other items for sale. Despite the businesses being small, breaking the front door or window, the burglars overlooked the impact such losses have on these local entrepreneurs' livelihoods. The crimes took place at the 100 block of W. Madison St on May 26, at the 0-100 block of N Wells St on May 29, and once again at the 100 block of W. Madison St on June 4.
Suspect information is currently limited, with the offender being described as a male, potentially aged between 20 and 50, who was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants, yellow gym shoes, and black gloves. Local businesses are admonished to remain vigilant and are advised by the police on precautionary measures such as ensuring good perimeter lighting, secure doors and windows, operating surveillance systems, and investing in alarm systems that could notify the authorities of break-ins.
Business owners and witnesses are further advised by the Chicago Police Department to avoid tampering with crime scenes and to immediately call 911 in the event of witnessing or falling victim to a crime. "If video surveillance is available, save and make a copy of the incident for investigating detectives," remind the owners, ensuring critical evidence is preserved. When approaching witnesses, they are requested to either stay on scene until the police arrive or to provide contact information for follow-up.
