On a routine Sunday morning patrol, the Coast Guard Cutter Robert Ward made contact with a small vessel off the coast of Point Loma, leading to the detention of seven individuals. According to a press release by the U.S. Coast Guard, the incident occurred approximately eight miles south of Point Loma, and involved a 20-foot white center console boat.
The initial sighting of the boat occurred two miles south of the maritime boundary line, at 8:42 a.m., with the Coast Guard Sector San Diego watchstanders directing the launch of the boarding team from the Robert Ward. Heading north, the vessel was interdicted without the necessity of force, revealing seven people claiming Mexican nationality on board.
All individuals, referred to as "aliens" in the Coast Guard statement, were subsequently transferred to the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol at Ballast Point on Sunday afternoon. Such interdictions are part of routine operations along the California coast, as authorities aim to manage and secure the maritime borders.
Coast Guard efforts to patrol the waters and enforce maritime laws are ongoing, reflecting the complex challenges posed by undocumented maritime migration. The details surrounding the journeys of the detained individuals remain undisclosed, though the interception points toward the continuing surveillance and security measures in place along our coastline.
