Coloradans joined in the nationwide celebration of Juneteenth today, a day that marks a cornerstone of American history. As community gatherings and reflections took place across the state, Governor Jared Polis took a moment to honor this significant occasion. "Today we celebrate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. This date is a reminder of the day all people finally earned their freedom from slavery, and reinvigorates our commitment to continue the fight to secure and maintain freedom and justice for everyone, as we celebrate diversity and continue building a more welcoming Colorado for All. We stand together in Colorado, united against hate and divisiveness, in celebrating our shared humanity so we may find a more free and prosperous future for everyone," Governor Polis stated, as per the Colorado Governor's Office.
Commemorating the third anniversary since Juneteenth was declared a state holiday in Colorado, the day has been embraced with outreach initiatives and educational events aimed at a deeper understanding of this important moment in the fight against racial injustice. Governor Polis, who signed the bill into law, continues to emphasize its significance in his message, a move that has been well received by communities advocating for change and recognition of the country's historical transgressions.
Juneteenth remains a symbol of freedom and an opportunity for education. As a day to remember and reflect on the long journey since June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to enslaved African Americans in Texas, Juneteenth is now a national moment of recognition.
