This morning in Columbia, Tennessee, an officer-involved shooting took place after police responded to a call about a man behaving suspiciously on Nashville Highway. According to a social media post by the Columbia Police Department, at approximately 1:00 AM, officers arrived at the scene to find a white male in the street, armed with a handgun. Despite efforts by the officers, the man allegedly continued to walk toward a more populated area while armed.
The department’s post outlined that for about ten minutes, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation by urging the man to drop his weapon, to no avail. As the individual neared the 1500 Block of Nashville Highway, he was shot by an officer. Following the shooting, the man was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center and underwent surgery. His current condition is unknown, as is his identity. No officers were injured, and the involved officer has been placed on administrative leave per standard protocol, the department reported.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the 22nd Judicial District Attorney, Brent Cooper, was contacted, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) was asked to take over the investigation. The Columbia Police Department's statement also specifies that further inquiries about the incident should be directed to TBI as the leading agency.
