A cyclist tragically lost his life yesterday after being struck by a vehicle near Grant's Trail in St. Louis County. The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. in the vicinity of the 9900 block of Big Bend Boulevard, a stretch of road known for its high pedestrian and biker activity. As reported by KSDK, the male cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries following the collision. He was later pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.
The driver involved in the incident stayed on the scene and cooperated with authorities, according to FOX 2 Now. Law enforcement has not yet released further details about the accident, including who was at fault. The aftermath of the crash stirred an immediate response from the local cycling community, with many expressing concerns about safety on the roads. Cyclist Courtney Cushard remarked on the ever-present fear of danger when biking, while fellow cyclist Robert Varner appealed to drivers, pleading, "Slow down." Varner said, "Think about the person on the bike, or the person on the sidewalk, or the mom with three bags of groceries, or the kid in the stroller as, you or someone you love, and not just as an inconvenience."
In the wake of the fatal accident, safety advocates have called for changes to improve the safety of bikers and pedestrians in the area. Michael Carmody of Safer Streets for Kirkwood and St. Louis County pointed out deficiencies such as inadequately visible street markings for crosswalks and insufficient warning signs for drivers about upcoming crosswalks. As First Alert 4 reported, Carmody also criticized the prolonged wait times at the intersection, citing that the delay can sometimes exceed a minute, which may prompt cyclists to risk crossing against the signal.
This tragedy underscores the tension between the burgeoning cycling culture in St. Louis County and the infrastructure that has yet to fully adapt to ensure their safety. Amidst the mourning of a life lost, community members and safety advocates alike are calling for immediate action, with Carmody demanding, "Quicker timing. Right now it should happen tonight, it should actually happen tonight, it’s easy to fix."
