A man was fatally shot by officers in Cookeville during an attempt to serve a domestic assault warrant, as confirmed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI). The officers, who were not injured, were involved in the incident that took place late last night, around 10:30 p.m., on the 2000 block of N. Willow Avenue, according to a report from WKRN.
The man identified as Dawson McCracken, 22 years old, was reportedly armed with a handgun when approached by law enforcement. In a release, the TBI stated that the officers tried to negotiate with McCracken before the situation escalated and he drew his weapon – this led to officers firing at him. Following the shooting, aid was rendered by the officers before McCracken was pronounced dead at a local hospital, WSMV reported.
Further details about the shooting have not been provided immediately. The TBI, in their role as impartial investigators, continue to collect evidence and conduct interviews to piece together the events leading upto the fatal shooting. These findings will subsequently be relayed to the District Attorney General for review, as mentioned in a social media update by the TBI linked in the comments of their Facebook post. The investigative process will help determine if the actions taken by the officers were justified, a decision that rests with the District Attorney General who requested the investigation.
The incident, now under scrutiny, serves as a reminder of the often fraught encounters between police officers and the public – a dynamic where the line between control and chaos is whisper-thin and potentially lethal. As the TBI indicated, the agency acts purely as fact-finders in such cases and is not responsible for determining whether the officers’ actions were justified. "Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration," the TBI emphasized according to statements obtained by both WKRN and WSMV.
