In an overwhelmingly quick decision, a Volusia County jury has pronounced Shantell Adkins guilty of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated assault for the 2023 killing of his wife, Shawntai Adkins, in front of her parents. The judgment came after a brief 17 minutes of deliberation, following a two-day trial, as reported by ClickOrlando.
Detailing the day of the crime, Adkins engaged in a heated argument with his wife on October 19, 2023. Shawntai reached out to her parents to help calm the situation, which then escalated, leading to Adkins fatally shooting his wife in the neck with a rifle as she attempted to leave their Fulton Street home. This act of violence unfolded to an unforeseen end with the parents of Shawntai as witnesses to their daughter's death. "It is every parent's worst nightmare to lose a child," State Attorney R.J. Larizza said in a statement obtained by Fox35Orlando. "Adkins executed our victim in front of her parents and then threatened to do the same to them." Shawntai's father, in a desperate attempt to escape, sustained a leg fracture, but he has since recovered.
The case, led by the Daytona Beach Police Department, saw Assistant State Attorney Andrew Urbanak and Chief Assistant State Attorney John Reid upholding the prosecution. Adkins, after committing the crime, turned the gun on himself but survived the self-inflicted gunshot.
Judge Kathleen McNeilly is now set to sentence Adkins on June 23, informs Fox35Orlando. With the convictions in place, Adkins is facing a mandatory life sentence, a conclusive end to a trial that has once more highlighted the grim reality of domestic violence and its devastating ripple effects on families and communities.
