DC's elite firefighters have been recognized for their heroism and dedication to community service, as announced in a recent honor from FireHouse Magazine's 2024 Valor and Community Service Awards. The Unit Citation accolade was given to units Engine Co. 17, Rescue Squad 2 & Truck Co. 4 from the DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department. Their commendation follows a harrowing rescue operation where these teams demonstrated not only courage but a deep commitment to saving lives amidst dangerous conditions.
The perilous incident occurred when a vehicle crashed into a one-story commercial building, causing a significant collapse and igniting a fire. Heavy debris trapped an individual inside the vehicle, and DC's Bravest sprang into action. The citation detailed that the members of Engine Co. 17 courageously stretched a hoseline through a small opening to protect the victim from the encroaching flames. According to a social media post by DC Fire And EMS, Rescue Squad 2 utilized a RIT pack to supply the trapped person with fresh air. Meanwhile, they were fighting to manage the fire and prevent any secondary collapse.
The coordinated rescue effort did not stop there. In a dangerous environment laden with the threats of further structural collapse and intensifying fire, firefighters from Rescue Squad 2 and 3 worked fervently to free the victim. This was achieved with the aid of a Rescue Wrecker, employed to lift heavy debris off the crashed automobile. Truck Co. 4's crew also contributed significantly by sawing off and lifting a column that had fallen on the vehicle, giving rescue workers the access needed to safely extract the trapped person. "The members of the crew from Rescue Squad 2 used a RIT pack to provide fresh air to the victim while other crews began rescue efforts," notes the DC Fire And EMS.
