This morning, tragedy struck on I-94 as a Dearborn Heights man lost his life in a collision with a stationary gravel hauler. The 64-year-old individual was driving a pickup truck when he crashed into the hauler, which had been parked on the shoulder of I-94 near Southfield Freeway due to mechanical problems. According to ClickOnDetroit, the fatal incident occurred at around 12:25 a.m.
The extent of the damage was apparent as the pickup truck was discovered with heavy damage to its front on the right and center lanes, while the gravel hauler remained on the shoulder. Authorities pronounced the pickup driver dead at the scene. There have not been any reports of other injuries connected to the incident. "Currently, it is unknown why the pick up driver ended up driving on the shoulder," Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw stated, as reported by Audacy. The investigation is set to continue pending results from the medical examiner and examination of other evidence.
Following the accident, portions of the freeway were closed for cleanup operations, causing delays for morning commuters. The westbound I-94 was closed at M-39 in Allen Park but has since reopened, according to FOX 2 Detroit. Drivers were initially advised to avoid the area while the ramp from the northbound Southfield Freeway to I-94 and the westbound I-94 at the Southfield Freeway were closed.
