Officials in Dearborn are clamping down on the use of illegal fireworks ahead of this year's July 4 festivities. Following a series of accidents and disturbances in past celebrations. Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud, backed by Police Chief Issa Shahin and Fire Chief Joseph Murray, announced a new zero-tolerance campaign to safely conduct celebrations, as reported by the City of Dearborn. Recognizing the elevated risks associated with firework misuse, Hammoud emphasized, "the health and safety of our residents is paramount."
Shahin detailed the city's stance, noting to residents that the number of officers and emergency teams will be notably increased to maintain order. "There's going to be a different posture from the Police Department this year," Shahin told Dearborn government news, as they prepare to swiftly address any illegal conduct. The new measures clearly state that engaging in dangerous firework activities outside of private property boundaries will lead directly to fines, and possibly, court time or incarceration.
The Dearborn laws reflect the state's prohibition on the discharge of fireworks on public property and outside of the specified time window from 11 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. between June 29 and July 5. These laws come as a response to previous unfortunate events where residents and first responders suffered injuries, and property, including school grounds, were damaged.
