A Detroit couple, Sherman Devaughn Jones, 46, and Sampaguita L. Jones, 41, both licensed foster care workers, have been charged with felony murder, torture and involuntary manslaughter in the death of a 9-year-old boy. On September 19, 2024, paramedics found the child unresponsive at a residence on Gladstone Street in Detroit. He was later pronounced dead due to pneumonia, according to findings by the Wayne County Medical Examiner, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
Further details from FOX 2 Detroit reveal that the boy, named Owen, exhibited numerous scars, discoloration, and was underweight with fractures on different parts of his body. Authorities allege the Joneses concealed him to hide his injuries and failed to seek medical care for his worsening pneumonia. During the couple's arraignment, prosecutors disclosed that Owen's right chest cavity was filled with pus, severely compressing his lung.
Concerns of abuse were reported to Child Protective Services as early as 2023 by a family member, however, according to ClickOnDetroit, an investigation was not initiated until after the child's death. During the legal proceedings assistant prosecuting attorney Erin Wilmoth stated, "This child suffered, and he suffered for a long time."
The allegations have prompted the court to take decisive action. "The allegations in this case are beyond egregious, your Honor," Wilmoth was quoted during the proceedings, as noted by ClickOnDetroit. Both defendants have been remanded to jail, with a probable cause conference scheduled for July 3, and a preliminary examination set for July 10.
