Thursday afternoon's incident in Detroit's east side escalated beyond a routine repossession when a woman, purported to be the vehicle's owner, allegedly fired shots at a repo driver, ultimately leading to police intervention and gunfire. According to CBS News Detroit, Detroit Police were on patrol around 3 p.m. on the 10900 block of Nottingham Road when they witnessed the woman with a handgun aiming at the man in a truck.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison revealed that the man was in the act of repossessing the truck. We can gather from ClickOnDetroit that he had driven to Nottingham Street to secure the vehicle. The woman, presumably contesting the legitimacy of the repossession, discharged multiple shots at the repo driver, prompting the police to return fire and strike her several times. Though serious, Bettison stated her injuries were non-life-threatening.
The repossession and subsequent shootout unfolded within a community where, Bettison emphasized, such violence over property should never occur, especially considering the presence of children. As reported by The Detroit News, Bettison expressed relief that none of the officers, nor the repo driver, were injured during the confrontation. The incident took place amid National Gun Violence Awareness Month, amplifying the significance of the altercation and the reminder that gun violence has irrevocable consequences.
The investigation into the shooting remains active, as detectives continue to canvass the area for witnesses and analyze video footage from nearby doorbell cameras. Authorities recovered the woman's weapon at the scene, alongside numerous shell casings, indicating the gravity of the incident. Bettison urged residents to "think" before using a firearm, encapsulating the sentiment that property disputes should never escalate to such violence.
