The latest figures for Detroit's casino industry show a modest revenue uptick in May 2025, with the three casinos raking in $114.0 million, a slight 1.2% increase from the previous year. Dominating yet again, MGM Grand Detroit accounted for almost half of the market share at 47%, followed by MotorCity Casino with 30% and Hollywood Casino at Greektown, grabbing a 23% slice of the casino revenue pie, as reported by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.
The majority of the revenue stream came from table games and slots, which brought in $112.7 million, on the other hand, the contribution from retail sports betting was substantially lower at $1.3 million, this segment of the market is not keeping pace with the traditional casino offerings, experiencing a notable 31.1% dip in year-over-year qualified adjusted gross receipts, although it marked a month-over-month increase from April.
When breaking down the revenues by establishment, MGM Grand Detroit saw a 2.4% revenue bump to $53.1 million in contrast to last year, MotorCity Casino had a more modest gain of 0.6% totaling $33.9 million, while Hollywood Casino at Greektown witnessed a slight decrease of 0.2%, generating $25.7 million. This financial performance has translated into substantial contributions to both the state and the city of Detroit; the casinos have paid a total of $9.1 million in state gaming taxes and $13.4 million in wagering taxes and development agreement payments to the city in May alone.
Despite retail sports betting acting almost as a side show to the main casino operations, it's still part of the revenue mix with MGM Grand Detroit bringing in $72,060, MotorCity Casino leading the trio with $684,821, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown not too far behind at $524,358, the retail sports betting sector generated a collective handle of $9.2 million, but compared to last year, its glory seems somewhat faded, for fantasy contests these numbers tell a different story, operators reported $722,655 in adjusted revenues and paid a noteworthy $60,703 in taxes for April.
