A Dyer County School Resource Officer is facing serious charges following allegations of misconduct from an incident back in October 2024. Jared Wayne Willcutt, who served with the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office, has been indicted on charges that include official misconduct, official oppression, and sexual battery involving an adult female from his time at the Newbern Police Department. The news came to light yesterday through a joint statement released by both Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box and Director of Dyer County Schools Cheryl Mathis.
The statement, which was posted on the Dyer County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, expressed regret over the situation. It was announced that Willcutt is currently on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. Having turned himself into the authorities, he was able to post a $25,000.00 bond. "We are saddened to inform our community that Jared Wayne Willcutt, a School Resource Officer with the Dyer County Sheriff’s Office, has come under investigation following an alleged incident that occurred in October 2024," the statement reads.
Ensuring the safety of students and maintaining the trust of the community are top priorities for the Dyer County officials. Both Mathis and Box emphasized their commitment to upholding these principles throughout the ordeal. "We want to reassure our community that we are taking all necessary actions to uphold the trust placed in us by our students, parents, and staff," they conveyed in the shared announcement on Dyer County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
"We will continue to work collaboratively to ensure a safe environment for our children and provide updates as appropriate," the Sheriff and Director pledged as per Dyer County Sheriff's Office.
