A Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent, identified as Timothy Ryan Gregg, faces charges related to the production of child sexual abuse material, as officially announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson. Gregg, 51, from Eagan, Minnesota, purportedly attempted to coerce a minor into engaging in sexually explicit conduct to create child pornography. Following the discovery of explicit material on the minor's cell phone by their father, authorities identified Gregg in the content, according to the court documents cited by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
In a statement, Acting U.S. Attorney Thompson remarked, "The U.S. Attorney’s Office will always hold defendants in positions of public trust to account, particularly when they commit crimes against vulnerable children." He also praised the prompt response and cooperation of the FBI and the Rochester Police Department in arresting Gregg. Gregg, who also serves as a Task Force Officer with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was ordered to remain in custody pending further proceedings after his initial court appearance.
Highlighting the gravity of the allegations, Special Agent in Charge Alvin M. Winston Sr. of the FBI Minneapolis conveyed, "There is no place in law enforcement — or in any position of public trust — for those who exploit minors." Winston underscored the FBI's dedication to probing such acts and upholding the principle that no individual is above the law, regardless of their position or status.
The FBI and the Rochester Police Department were commended by the U.S. Attorney's Office for their diligent investigation, leading to Gregg's apprehension. Assistant U.S. Attorney Harry M. Jacobs is assigned to the prosecution of the case. While a federal complaint is a serious accusation, it's essential to remember that Gregg remains presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law, an imperative standard that ensures fairness within the justice system.
