Oregon's political landscape saw a new addition this morning as Dr. Sue Rieke Smith took the oath to serve in the House of Representatives. A seasoned educator and health care professional, Dr. Rieke Smith will represent House District 26, which includes Wilsonville, Sherwood, King City, and parts of Tigard, Bull Mountain, and Parrett Mountain. She was chosen for this role by a joint meeting of the Washington, Clackamas, and Yamhill County Commissioners on the previous Friday evening.
In an announcement from the House Democrats, newly-appointed Rep. Rieke Smith stated, "I want to thank everyone for supporting me to get to this point and everyone in the legislature for what has already been a warm welcome," said Rep. Rieke Smith, as reported by the Oregon Legislature. "No need for a long speech. There's a lot to be done. Let's get to work." Her concise remarks point to a pragmatic approach as she steps into her new legislative duties.
Beginning her career in healthcare, Rep. Rieke Smith's work as a trauma and public health nurse gave her firsthand experience with people during their most trying times. She later transitioned into education, implementing a turnaround at a middle school in Salem-Keizer that led to her recognition as the Oregon Middle School Principal of the Year in 2011. She advanced to roles as superintendent for Springfield and later for Tigard-Tualatin before making her foray into Oregon politics.
House Majority Leader Ben Bowman heralded the addition of Dr. Rieke Smith to the legislature. "After an accomplished career in public education, Rep. Rieke Smith is ready to hit the ground running as a legislator," said Bowman, as per a report by the Oregon Legislature. "She brings a wealth of experience, accomplishments, and knowledge at a critical moment for our state. I have no doubt she will be a powerful and effective voice for her constituents."
