In a turn of events, the El Dorado County District Attorney's Office has dropped all charges against Sacramento firefighter Adam Blankenship, who was initially accused of various sex crimes, as first reported by ABC10; KCRA 3 also covered the story.
Blankenship, who faced multiple charges including continuous molestation of a child under 14 and unlawful recording without consent, was released after "new evidence emerges after a case is filed—evidence that affects our ability to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt," leading to a re-evaluation and subsequent dismissal of the case, spelled out the District Attorney's office in statements obtained by both publications, his arrest back in April drew attention as it took place while he was on duty at Sacramento Fire Department Station 12.
The statement from the District Attorney emphasized their ethical duty "to re-evaluate," adding that "If the legal standard can no longer be met, we must dismiss the case; this decision is not a judgment on the victim or the defendant; it is a reflection of our responsibility to do what justice requires."
Meanwhile, Sacramento Fire officials have confirmed that Blankenship remains on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of their own internal investigation, they have confirmed his employment with the department, and despite the charges being dropped, the scrutiny into the alleged actions that led to his arrest continues. KCRA 3 has reached out for a response from the Sacramento Fire Department regarding their decision-making process post-dismissal.
