The El Paso Independent School District Board has set a new standard for financial prudence and staff support amidst statewide economic challenges. The Board adopted a $547 million operating budget for the 2025-26 school year on Tuesday, aimed at enhancing student achievement while providing a sustainable financial base for the district's future. The budget includes pay raises for teachers and staff and a renewed commitment to fiscal responsibility, highlighted by a significant reduction in the projected budget shortfall, now down to $6 million.
"Given the prevailing financial climate impacting school districts across Texas, we are proud to be moving El Paso ISD towards greater stability," said Interim Superintendent Martha Aguirre, as per El Paso ISD. Aguirre praised the district for making the tough decisions necessary to swiftly reduce the budget gap and emphasized the commitment to balancing this with the district's dedication to educational excellence.
Towards concrete measures for employee support, the Board has greenlit the 2025–26 Employee Compensation Plan, which offers teachers salary increases based on their experience, and introduces a hike in starting salaries, now beginning at $58,750. The new compensation tiers reflect $1,000, $2,500, and $5,000 raises for teachers with 0–2, 3–4, and 5 or more years of experience, respectively. These raises come as part of an effort to retain the district's talented educators and remain competitive in the job market.
It's not just teachers who will benefit, as the district has also announced a 1.5% general pay rise for all hourly and non-teacher employees. El Paso ISD Board of Trustees President Leah Hanany underscored the district's dual focus on fiscal responsibility and competitive compensation: "This budget reflects our ongoing commitment to thoughtful stewardship and student success," said Hanany, as obtained by El Paso ISD. She also announced the district's intention to aggressively address revenue challenges while minimizing the impact on student services.
