A man has been sentenced for a second instance of home invasion and stalking of Detroit rapper Eminem. Matthew Hughes was found guilty by a Macomb County jury and given a sentence of 15 to 30 years in prison. Hughes' sentencing comes after he was arrested for breaking into Eminem's property in Clinton Township in August 2024, as ClickOnDetroit reported.
In 2020, Hughes had his first encounter with the law when he broke into the home of the music icon, whose legal name is Marshall Mathers III. During this incident, he was discovered by Eminem himself. Following the ordeal, Hughes faced charges of first-degree home invasion and aggravated stalking. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido expressed, per The Detroit News, “No one, celebrity or not, should ever feel unsafe in their own home."
The judge also levied additional conditions upon Hughes, ordering him not to contact Eminem or be within 500 feet of his home. These measures emphasize the intention of the law to protect individuals' sense of security and privacy, whether they be public figures or private citizens.
Matthew Hughes was represented by the Macomb County Public Defender's Office, which, at the time of reporting, had not made any comments on the sentencing. This latest sentence will run consecutively with an early conviction for stalking, effectively setting a minimum sentence of at least 18 years, as MLive detailed. The concurrent pursuit of justice reflects a determined legal stance on the severity of home invasions and the right to personal safety.
