Residents in Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha are bracing for a wave of extreme heat starting today, with temperatures soaring high enough to trigger an official warning from the weather authorities. The National Weather Service Milwaukee/Sullivan WI has issued an Extreme Heat Warning that emphasizes the critical nature of the conditions forecasted. "Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees expected," says the agency.
Particularly, the warning is in effect from noon today until 7 p.m. CDT Monday, covering Kenosha, Milwaukee, and Racine Counties. The NWS advises, "Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors." It's also important to note the caution against leaving children and pets in vehicles, where within a short period, the temperatures could become lethal.
The threat isn't confined to the risk of heat alone, with a High Swim Risk effective this morning continuing into the evening for Sheboygan and Ozaukee Counties. The NWS alert warns of life-threatening waves and currents – recommending people stay out of the water and avoid danger zones such as piers and breakwalls.
The heat is projected to persist through Monday, bearing humid conditions that make it feel hotter than the thermometer might suggest. Heat index values may exceed 100 degrees across the affected areas, particularly during the afternoon hours. In the midst of these sizzling conditions, "There is a moderate swim risk that may occur on Sunday at local beaches," according to the Hazardous Weather Outlook by the National Weather Service.
It's not just heat on residents' minds, however. The outlook ahead also brings chances for thunderstorms, with increasing probabilities from Monday through Thursday.
