Fayetteville's City Center Park is gearing up for a major playground renovation, but summer fun is still on tap for visitors. While the park remains a popular family destination, certain areas have been closed off after safety concerns were raised. Several playground features—including the rope bridge, climbing tower, and the curved blue slide—were found to be unsafe due to wear and vandalism. Though parts of the play area are off-limits, other sections remain open as the park prepares for upgrades later this summer.
The safety warnings arrived just in time for the season's peak when Deputy Public Services Director Cajen Rhodes and his team noticed, “Just as we were opening the spray pad for the season in May, we noticed areas on the rope bridge that had been vandalized, making it unsafe,” he reported in a statement obtained by the City of Fayetteville's official website. Subsequent inspection led to the broader shutdown. Rhodes explained, “We hope to start the replacement process after the summer season is over.” They’re banking on foresight saving the day—and preventing a mid-summer closure of the park’s splash pad and functional play areas.
Despite the temporary closures, City Center Park is holding onto its vibrant appeal. The spray pad remains a highlight, with its fountains set to run Tuesday through Sunday, offering refreshing fun for kids. A special session is also planned for Labor Day Monday, giving families one last splash before summer ends. Located just behind historic Downtown Fayetteville’s City Hall, the park will replace the damaged playground equipment while preserving the rest for continued public enjoyment.
City officials are keen to keep the play safe and are calling on community vigilance to stem vandalism. For those enjoying the park, steering clear of barricaded zones is essential. Witnessing an act of vandalism should be a direct ticket to calling Fayetteville Police at 911.
