Boulder Police were called to an attack on the Pearl Street Mall at 1:26 p.m. on June 1, where a group participating in a weekly peaceful event was targeted, leading to eight individuals being hospitalized, with ages ranging from 52 to 88. The police responded to the scene at 1325 Pearl St. and promptly arrested suspect Mohamed Sabry Soliman, whose actions are now being investigated by the FBI as an act of targeted terrorism. According to the City of Boulder, the 45-year-old Soliman, from El Paso County, was equipped with a makeshift flamethrower and was reported to have yelled "Free Palestine" during the attack before his swift capture by responding officers.
As the investigation into the Pearl Street assault unfolds, the FBI is taking steps to gather evidence, interviewing witnesses, and they're requesting that anyone with digital media, a such as videos or social media posts upload these at the FBI’s dedicated link, to piece together the events that led to this disturbance. In coordination with Boulder Police, FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek emphasized support for the victims, as obtained by City of Boulder, saying, "We stand in full solidarity with those targeted and we will continue to ensure that justice is pursued swiftly, support is provided to victims and their communities, and preventative action is taken to protect everyone’s safety."
Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn, confronting another chapter of violence in the community, called for unity in the face of fear and uncertainty, and assured that the increased presence of law enforcement at upcoming events and locations throughout Boulder is intended for the safety of its citizens. Redfearn's address to the local community, declaring a call for solidarity amid adversities: "Now is not the time to be divisive," as reported by the City of Boulder.
