Flatbush, Brooklyn has become the latest stage in New York's ongoing battle against illegal fireworks, with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) seizing around $250,000 worth of explosives last Saturday. Adding details to the city's canvas of crime prevention, the FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker announced that Fire Marshals arrested the owner of Everbright Trading Co., Lisen Pan, following a tip-off from the Suffolk County police regarding a buyer who had purchased illegal fireworks from the business, as FOX 5 New York reported.
The initial probe, which saw plainclothes marshals discovering an array of illegal fireworks on business premises, was succeeded by an undercover sting and subsequent search warrant execution, resulting in over 1,000 illicit fireworks being confiscated, CBS New York detailed the proceedings alongside the charges against Pan, which include criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree and unlawful dealing with fireworks and dangerous fireworks.
Consequences for these actions escalated as Pan also faces charges of reckless endangerment, highlighting the inherent risks such fireworks pose to urban environments. "Fireworks are dangerous and life-threatening, and they have no place in the hands of the public," Tucker described the FDNY’s position on unregulated pyrotechnics clearly, as per FOX 5 New York's coverage.
This sentiment was reflected by Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez, who emphasized the potential threat to public safety, "The massive amount of powerful fireworks allegedly possessed by this defendant made his conduct not only unlawful, but also a danger to public safety that necessitated decisive action," according to a statement obtained by CBS New York. Summonses were further issued for infractions such as illegal storage without a permit and obstructing sprinkler heads, showcasing authorities' rigorous approach to fire code enforcement.
