A federal judge has blocked a Trump administration policy that aimed to prevent Harvard University from enrolling international students. On Thursday night, U.S. District Court Judge Allison Burroughs granted Harvard's request for a temporary restraining order, halting the enforcement of the policy.
The policy would have denied visas to thousands of foreign students planning to begin or continue their studies at Harvard. According to CBS News, Harvard stated that its more than 7,000 F-1 and J-1 visa holders, and their dependents, were being negatively impacted by the policy.
This temporary restraining order extends a previous order issued last month. In its amended complaint, Harvard argued that the policy was part of a broader campaign by the government in response to the university’s public positions, as per the NBC Boston.
The dispute is part of a larger conflict between the Trump administration and Harvard, which includes disagreements over the university’s handling of campus protests and diversity policies. The administration has also raised concerns about antisemitism and is reviewing federal funding to the university.
For now, the ruling allows international students at Harvard to remain enrolled while the legal process continues.
