Firefighters in Villa Rica were once again called to battle blazes at an ammunition supply company, marking yet another emergency at the same location in recent years. The incident occurred at Georgia Arms on Industrial Court, where an explosion was reported around 8:30 p.m. Thursday. According to WSB-TV's coverage, the fire was subdued relatively quickly by emergency crews, with no reported injuries or damage to the main building.
The outbuilding that was engulfed in flames was said to house gunpowder, a material prone to combustion and explosive reactions. FOX 5 cameras observed serious damage to part of the building and nearby trees that had caught fire from the explosion. Despite the dramatic nature of the fire, authorities reported that the blaze was controlled swiftly, signaling an efficient response from the fire department. Fire officials confirmed to FOX 5 Atlanta that the structure contained gunpowder and they managed to get the situation under control rapidly.
Concern and uncertainty linger among employees and the community, especially considering the history of fires at this particular company. Georgia Arms had previously suffered "unimaginable damage" from a "catastrophic fire" in 2023, as mentioned in a Facebook post shared by the company itself. This similarity between the past and present incidents raises questions about safety and preventive measures at the facility.
Investigators have been examining evidence, including video footage, to shed light on the cause of the latest fire. Interim Carroll County Fire Chief Dave Wade said in a statement obtained by WSB-TV, "The danger of it is the biggest reason, but this fire, everything is stored how it's supposed to be stored, so it's relatively safe until it's not. Which is kind of what we were dealing with tonight. So once the explosion is over, you're just dealing with some spot fires." Despite the initial investigation pointing away from foul play, the full investigation is yet to be completed.
As investigations continue, Villa Rica Police Department encourages anyone with information about the fire to come forward, hoping to better understand the circumstances that led to these repeated incidents.
