Flagstaff is calling on artists to put their creative stamp on the Switzer Canyon Roundabout. The city has opened up opportunities for talents to submit their Statements of Qualifications (SOQs) to create a three-dimensional piece of public art at the busy intersection of North Switzer Canyon Drive and North Turquoise Drive. As per the announcement on Flagstaff's official civic alerts page, applicants have until July 1, 2025, at 3 p.m. to throw their hat into the ring.
The chosen artwork is set to become a new landmark for the area, which is part of a single-lane roundabout completed back in 2019. Jana Weldon, the Beautification, Arts & Sciences Program Manager for the City of Flagstaff, described the initiative as "a wonderful opportunity to create a three-dimensional artwork for our community—one that enhances infrastructure and underscores the City’s commitment to artistic expression in our public spaces." Nevertheless, artists need to carefully design to maintain essential traffic signage and sightlines.
The artwork isn't just about aesthetics; it's a chance for artists to engage with the community, conduct location research, and find artistic inspiration to produce something iconic and suited to this specific Flagstaff locale. Artists interested in applying must register as a vendor on the City’s Planet Bids portal and then submit their SOQ. The successful applicant will score a design services contract, and if the city approves the design, a follow-up contract for fabrication and installation.
