Former Knoxville police officer Dan Roark was sentenced yesterday to 300 months in federal prison. According to the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Tennessee, Roark's case was resolved with a plea agreement where he admitted guilt on charges of child exploitation and receipt of child pornography.
The investigation that led to Roark's sentencing began with the Scott County Virginia Sheriff's Department (SCVSD) receiving an anonymous tip back in October 2023 that indicated a young girl was involved in distributing child pornography at the behest of Roark, while he was a police officer, the investigation would later reveal, that Roark coerced the child's mother through text messages to send him explicit material of her daughter. This case, highlighting the disturbing intersection of authority and abuse, was diligently pursued by various law enforcement agencies, including the SCVSD and the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.
Roark's indictment stemmed from the combined efforts of Detective Daniel Ross of SCVSD, HSI Task Force Officer Cortney Dugger, and Investigator Chanel Finnell of the 9th Judicial District Attorney General's Office. With Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Kolman representing the prosecution, the court has handed down a sentence that also includes a lifetime of supervised release and mandatory registration with state sex offender registries after Roark's prison term concludes.
The case was part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative the Department of Justice launched in 2006 aiming to identify and prosecute perpetrators of child exploitation while also working to rescue victims, for those seeking to know more about this pivotal program and resources related to internet safety education, they can find a wealth of information available on the Justice Department's website.
