Former Massachusetts State Senator Dean Tran has pleaded guilty to charges of larceny, misleading law enforcement, and filing a false license-to-carry application. Tran, 49, was accused of obtaining firearms from an elderly constituent under false pretenses and giving inconsistent statements during the investigation, according to the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office.

In June 2019, Tran bought a late husband's gun collection from an elderly widow for $1,500 but later returned the guns and took a Colt .45 pistol without permission. This led to the larceny charge. He also faced charges for providing false information on a license-to-carry application in May 2019.

Tran received a six-month sentence for each charge, to be served concurrently at the Worcester House of Correction alongside an existing federal sentence. Three other charges were dropped as part of the plea deal.

The case was handled by the Attorney General’s Office Enterprise and Major Crimes Division, with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police, the AGO’s Digital Evidence Laboratory, and the Fitchburg Police Department.
