In a move that marks another chapter in her storied career in public service, Bridget Brink has officially thrown her hat into the ring for Michigan's 7th Congressional District. The former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine is looking to unseat incumbent Republican Tom Barrett in the upcoming 2026 election cycle. "We need principled leaders who have a proven record of standing up to Trump's policies, and fighting like hell for our democratic values," Brink stated in her campaign materials, as reported by CBS News Detroit.
Brink, a Democrat, brings to the table a three-decade tenure in the U.S. Foreign Service, where she served under presidents from both major political parties. Having resigned in April due to what she describes as policy differences with the Trump administration, she told WLNS, "I felt it was my duty to step down." Brink's campaign seems centered around her foreign policy experience, highlighting her service as the first woman to serve as a U.S. ambassador in a war zone.
Citing President Trump's handling of the Ukraine conflict, Brink's platform pivots to domestic issues, conveying a narrative of advocacy for rights, freedom, and holding power accountable. She declared, "Our rights, our freedoms, our very democracy is at stake," a sentiment obtained by MLive. Brink's career as a diplomat includes postings in Europe and West Asia, but it's her familial and educational roots in Michigan that underline her campaign pitch.
A native of Lansing and touting a family history in Eaton County stretching back to 1860, Brink's connection to Michigan is set as a cornerstone of her campaign. Tackling "chaos and corruption coming out of Washington," she takes aim at policies she believes hurt her home state, like "reckless tariffs that are raising the cost of living for working families," as highlighted in her remarks to MLive. With education from Kenyon College and the London School of Economics, Brink aligns her global perspective with a local focus aimed at representing Michiganders in Congress.
The battle for the 7th District, representing a swath of counties including Clinton, Ingham, Livingston, and Shiawassee, will no doubt be closely watched as Brink attempts to leverage her foreign policy chops and Michigan heritage against Barrett, who secured the seat in a close 2024 race.
