In a bid to honor the historic significance of Juneteenth, the City of Garland has announced plans to throw an evening fete. From 5 to 9 p.m. tomorrow, the celebrations are set to take over the Downtown Square. This comes as a gesture to commemorate Juneteenth, which marks a pivotal day in our nation's history, the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
As part of the observance, city officials have confirmed a pause in the usual bustle of municipal activity. A variety of city amenities will close their doors next Thursday, June 19, including all City of Garland offices, utility customer service and tax office, recreation and senior centers, as well as libraries. In a move that aims to both acknowledge the solemnity of the day and give space for reflection, Garland's usual services will take a brief respite. It is important, however, to note that essential services, such as the Hinton Landfill, will remain unaltered, operating during its regular hours, according to the City of Garland's announcement.
Those planning their waste disposal around the holiday need not fret. Despite the closures, the city has made it clear that trash, recycling, and brush and bulky item collection will continue uninterrupted, following their typical Tuesday-Friday schedule. Thus, residents can expect services to roll out as usual, sans disruptions. Meanwhile, for the merrymakers and leisure-seekers, Garland has a splash of good news—the pools and splash pads' operation details are readily available on the Aquatics homepage at GarlandTX.gov for all to peruse.
