The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken on the somber task of dissecting the moments leading to an officer-involved shooting in Fulton County, as per usual protocol when a life is cut down by law enforcement. Details provided by the GBI reveal that Elieser Rivera, Jr., 51, from Passaic, NJ, was the individual who met his end on Sunday, after an encounter with an officer near an apartment complex on McDaniel Street SW.
An early morning property violation quickly escalated when Rivera, Jr. was seen inflicting damage on a police vehicle. A witness caught sight of the act, promptly alerting nearby officers. In the aftermath, as the investigation unfolded, a police officer came upon Rivera, Jr., who, armed with a piece of metal, refused to stand down despite repeated commands. The refusal culminated in the firing of the officer's weapon, a decision irreversible, which left Rivera, Jr., lifeless on the scene. No injuries befell the officer during the incident, according to information from the GBI.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office now has custody of Rivera's remains and will conduct an autopsy to uncover more about the circumstances of his death. As the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) works to maintain its independence throughout the investigation, its findings will ultimately be presented to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office for review.
