
Google has initiated another wave of cost reductions, offering buyouts to employees across various departments, including search, advertising, research, and engineering. The exact number of staff affected remains undisclosed. This information aligns with company statements and has been corroborated by reports from multiple news organizations.
According to a statement obtained by Click2Houston, a Google spokesperson, Courtenay Mencini, revealed, "Earlier this year, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit program with severance for U.S.-based Googlers, and several more are now offering the program to support our important work ahead." It appears the company is nudging its workforce to streamline operations in anticipation of strategic pivots.
In addition to the buyouts, Google has called upon remote workers living near offices to return to a hybrid work model. This initiative intends to foster more in-person collaboration among teams. "A number of teams are also asking remote employees who live near an office to return to a hybrid work schedule in order to bring folks more together in-person," Mencini said, as reported by ABC News.
The reduction in workforce began in earnest in 2023 when Google responded to declining demand for online services post-pandemic by laying off 12,000 employees. The earlier retrenchment aimed at right-sizing the organization after a period of unprecedented demand and growth during the COVID-19 pandemic.
